Keeping Fit Aboard An Amadeus River Cruise

8th August 2017

River cruising is known as one of the most relaxing ways to visit multiple cities in one trip. One of the attractions of this type of cruising is the various options available to keep fit whilst on board – something many of us are glad for after the never ending options of food and drink which can be found aboard all of our ships. All the ships in the Amadeus fleet boast many mod-cons also found in an average 4* hotel room, including generous storage space, direct dial telephones, hairdryers, en-suite bathrooms and a modern fitness room. With the ability to unpack only once as you traverse through various cities and countries, there’s no excuse not to pack those trainers and give keeping fit whilst aboard a river cruise vessel a go.

Fitness Room

Amadeus Silver Fitness Room

Each fitness room aboard an Amadeus vessel will vary. However, most boast a range of options including state of the art fitness machines, free weights and yoga mats. The majority of our ships will have a treadmill, bicycle machines and rowing machines, all of which are very easy to operate. But if you ever do need any help you can use the direct dial telephone to call reception and a crew member will be with you in no time to show you the ropes. A wall-mounted television is also available in the fitness rooms to give you some music or TV channels to watch during your work out. The fitness room is open and available to use around the clock, so you can always find time to take advantage of this great facility.

Morning Gymnastics

Morning gymnastics is available aboard most of the Amadeus fleet and usually takes place around 7am, although this will vary depending on the ship and itinerary. You will have the option to join fellow guests, and sometimes crew members, for an hour of light stretching to wake up your body for a day of exploration - all guided by an experienced gymnastics instructor. This will usually take place either up on the Sun Deck or in the Fitness Room. There’s no experience needed and everyone is welcome. Wake up and stretch before heading down to the Panorama Restaurant for a breakfast fit for a king.

Bicycles

Many of the Amadeus River Cruise vessels carry a small fleet of bicycles, along with helmets and locks, which can be used free of charge by all passengers. Take advantage of this option and join fellow guests exploring the town or city by bicycle. This allows passengers to discover things at their own pace and gives you the freedom to get to know these places in your own way. To use one of the bicycles, simply head to reception and request the use of these and they will take care of the rest.

Exploration and Excursions

One of the many benefits to choosing a river cruise for your holiday is having the option to explore various cities and towns, many of which are in walking distance from where your vessel docks, in the heart of the city. Set off for a day of exploration on foot, get lost and find yourself again down the streets and side streets of the small quaint towns dotted along the river, before heading back to your ship. You will be sure to build up an appetite for lunch or dinner, or head back for afternoon tea served in the bar.

Alternatively, you can opt to take part in an organised excursion with one of the experienced English-speaking tour guides. These range from walking city tours to guided tours in vehicles or a variation of transportation methods. For example, the city tour of Strasbourg includes a bus tour of the city outskirts; a walking tour of the centre including the Strasbourg Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Strasbourg; followed by a canal boat tour through the winding canals, even including two small locks. A guided excursion is the perfect way to explore a city or town unknown and to learn about the history and architecture along the way. A walking tour is certainly a great way to keep fit aboard a river cruise whilst going at your own pace, all with your experienced tour guide giving you the information you need through your wireless headset, allowing you to really go at your own pace.

Sun Deck

Amadeus Sun Deck

Whilst an excursion or bicycle is a great way to keep fit when your ship is docked, there are many times throughout your itinerary where you will be sailing gently along the river. And during this period, there are still options available to keep fit and active in addition to the fitness room. The Sun Deck is on the top level of all of the ships within the Amadeus fleet. Each ship has various options to enjoy such as shuffleboard, giant chess, golf putting greens, small plunge pools and even an infinity pool aboard the brand new Amadeus Provence. The options and opportunities are endless and, on top of all of this, there is always the option to walk or jog a few laps of the Sun Deck (or to the bar and back).

Amadeus River Cruises are pleased to announce the launch of our brand new golf-themed river cruises for 2018.  Accompanied by PGA teaching golf pro Frank Adamowicz, golfers can now combine a thrilling river cruise through Europe, discovering the continent's finest food, wine, history & culture, with their love for golf.

Keeping fit and active aboard a river cruise vessel couldn’t be easier and Amadeus River Cruises really does have many options and something to suit everyone, so come aboard and give them a go.
